Energy Efficiency Can Start At Home

Now that long hot summer is over, it’s time to reset the thermostat. While there are still plenty of warm days ahead–one of the great things about living in Austin–we hopefully won’t be breaking any heat records. Cooler weather means resetting the thermostat, which saves both energy and money.

According to the Earth Day Network, half of most household’s energy costs go towards heating and cooling. Setting the thermostat just two degrees higher can significantly reduce cooling bills and save energy. Buying a programmable thermostat is also a good idea. Austin Energy even has a Power Partners program, which provides a free programmable thermostat along with installation. The participants in the program agree to coordinate cycling of their air conditioner. For example, the AC would be cycled off between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. when demand for electricity is highest. Cycling helps keep the demand for electricity level, which saves the city and the individual money.

Another surprising drain on household energy is the refrigerator, particularly if it is an older model. Austin Energy offers cash incentives for turning in old refrigerators, as much as $50, and they will properly dispose of the old one. On average, the refrigerator uses 10 to 15 percent of a household’s electricity each month, even more if there is one in the garage as well. Setting the thermostat lower, cleaning the coils and making sure the refrigerator is not placed in a warm area can all help to reduce the amount of energy it uses.

The refrigerator is not the only household appliance that can help reduce energy expenses. Turning the setting down on hot water heaters and insulating the pipes can make a substantial difference in the energy used. Try running the dishwasher and clothes washer with full loads only. Using cooler water settings when possible and letting some things air-dry are also little acts with big returns.

A household energy audit is not a bad idea either. Austin En 1000 ergy has qualified professionals, but a quick perusal of the web shows that there are many companies out there providing this service. The couple hundred dollars spent on the audit is very likely to be made back with the suggested home energy improvements. Austin Energy even offers free improvements to low-income customers with services like attic insulation, duct repair, caulking and solar screens. These are things that an intrepid homeowner could do on his or her own, as well. Remember, little things can make a big difference.

Loft Insulation – Barrier To Prevent Heat Loss & Condensation

Loft insulation creates an insulation barrier to resist heat transfer in the roof or attic space. The attic space in your house acts as the point of contact between the weather outside and the house and, if insulated properly, can resist unwanted heat transfer. A Brief History Of Insulation – Look How Far We’ve Come

The Ancient Egyptians used it. So did the Ancient Romans. In the 1800’s, a guy wrote about it, sort of. By the Great Depression, there was a growing demand for it. In the mid 1970’s, medical science told us we were doing it wrong. Now, 21st century builders have to "go green" to earn green. And the future seems brighter (and more energy efficient than ever.) We’ve used cork, asbestos, glass, plastic, foam and even mud to do it. Yes, when you look at the history of insulation, in all its myriad forms, we can see just how far we’ve come.

The Ancient Egyptians used insulation to keep their desert homes and buildings cool, and their linen clothing warmer in the cooler winter months. They added papyrus linings to their loincloths and skirts to keep warm in winter. They built their homes of thick brick, designed to help keep out the sun’s scorching heat in summer.

The Ancient Greeks knew about asbestos, in fact they named it. They used it to dress their imported slaves, as well as for the wicks of their eternal temple flames, napkins and the funeral dress of kings. The material’s flame-resistant properties gave it a bit of a mystical appeal to the Greeks. They had a common name for it, too – crysotile – which means "gold cloth." The Greeks were the first to go on record as noting that asbestos caused a "lung sickness" in the slaves who worked with it and wore it. The Greeks also knew how to insulae their homes, using cavity walls. The air trapped in between the inner and outer walls would act to help keep out the colder or hotter air, depending on the season.

Always on the look-out for the next best thing, the Ancient Romans also dressed their slaves in asbestos cloth. They made tablecloths and napkins for restaurants and banquets out of asbestos cloth, throwing it into the fire between diners or courses to clean it of crumbs. The Romans were perhaps the ancient world’s most noted engineers, and they knew enough to build cavity walled structures, too. They learned to insulate their heated water pipes with cork from Spain and Portugal so that they could be placed under floors without fear of overheating the flooring.

The Vikings and other northern Europeans learned to insulate their homes with mud chinking, plastering it in the cracks between the logs or hewn boards of the buildings walls.. When mixed with horse or ca 1000 ttle dung and straw, the mud was known as daub, and was considered a stronger, better building material over plain old mud. They created clothing out of thick sheep’s wool, and may have even used cloth to line the interior walls of their homes.

Cloth came to be widely used in the Middle Ages among the wealthy as stone once again came into fashion for home building. These imposing stone structures tended to be drafty, damp and cold. Large ornately embroidered or woven tapestries would be hung on interior walls, partly to block out the drafts and partly to soak up the dampness. Rushes on the floors also helped to keep things a bit warmer underfoot.

During the Industrial Revolution, manufacturers turned once again to asbestos for their insulation needs. Steam-powered technology meant lots of hot pipes to carry the steam to where it was needed. These hot steam supply pipes could be made safer for workers by wrapping them in asbestos. With the invention of the steam locomotive, the demand for asbestos exploded. Suddenly, fireboxes, boilers, pipes and even boxcars and breaks were lined or wrapped in the heat retarding, flame-resistant fibers.

During the Great Depression, residents of the "Dust Bowl" of the US Southern Plains region attempted to insulate their homes from the choking dust storms by using strips of cloth coated in flour-based glue or paste. These could then be pasted over cracks around window and door frames to try and keep out the dust. City dwellers often did something similar with newspapers, stuffing them in cracks in window frames in hopes of keeping their frigid tenement apartments a bit warmer against winter’s chill.

Asbestos continued to be the main source of both industrial and residential insulation through the 19th and mid 20th centuries, though. World War II saw it being used in aircraft and ship production. In the 40’s and 50’s, mineral wool or rock wool started to overtake asbestos in popularity, however. Having been "discovered" in the 1870’s a safer manufacturing process led to its wider spread use among construction and industry.

The rediscovery in the mid-1970’s of asbestos’s harmful health effects signaled the death knell for asbestos materials in building construction. You’ll still find it keeping your automotive breaks and clutches cool, however, and crysotile is still being mined in some countries.

With the decline of asbestos, other forms of insulation had to be found and found quickly. Fiberglass insulation comes in various forms and is considered to be the "traditional" choice in home insulation. Styrofoam sheets and PVC wraps are now available. Concerns over the ecology and environment have led to the "discovery" of several forms of insulation considered to be more environmentally sound. Paper cellulose, recycled cotton denim and even sheep wool are being touted as the new wave in insulation. Imagine, cloth and wool as insulating materials? Perhaps we haven’t come that far after all!

Insulation In Salt Lake City Roofing

Roof insulation keeps your home comfortable, regardless of the weather conditions. It is very important to have the roof properly insulated so that you can save a lot on your energy bills.

Basic techniques of thermal insulation
There are basically five techniques by which thermal insulation can be achieved in roofs. These are (i) blankets, (ii) blown-in, (iii) foamed-in-place, (iv) rigid insulation and (v) reflective systems. Blankets are flexible products, and are made from mineral fibers and are available in standard widths. Blown-in insulation includes loose fiber pellets that are blown into building cavities using some pneumatic equipment. Foamed-in-place insulation involves application of polyurethane foams using special equipment for mixing and applying the material, and has the advantage that it reduces the air leaks substantially. While rigid insulation is made from a variety of fibrous materials in board-like forms, reflective insulation system is made from aluminum foil with a variety of material used as a backing film.

Cellulose fiber insulation
The standard insulation used in older Salt Lake City roofing was the fiberglass batts, which has a good insulation property but is increasingly avoided by a Salt Lake City roofer because of the toxic elements present in it. The recycled cellulose fiber has, of late emerged as the most popular choice for residential buildings, which is also quite eco-friendly. Made from paper products, such as recycled newspapers, this option is a bit expensive, but offers a much better insulation quality.

Other options
Apart from cellulose fiber, there are various other choices available in the market today, which are increasingly used by Salt Lake City roofing contractors providing roofing services in Utah and especially those based in the Wasatch area. Recycled denim that consists of wastes from denim and other cotton material is much easier to handle than cellulose fiber. It also has good fire retardant properties. Soy insulation is made from soybean oil that is spread on the roof. It has a property to expand, which fills all the cracks before it hardens. Sheep’s wool is another material used in construction in Salt Lake City roofing, which is arguably the best roofing insulation available in the market. Though it will raise your r 1000 oofing estimate compared to other choices, it has a good fire resistant and moisture repellant properties.

Which one to select
While choosing a roofing material, it is essential to keep in mind that different materials are suitable for different climatic conditions. They differ in required initial investment, and there are some materials that require more frequent repair and maintenance than the other. It is advisable to work out the total cost you are likely to incur during the entire life span of the roof rather than only the initial investment.

Sprayed Foam Home Insulation – Turn Your Home Energy Smart

Sprayed Foam home insulation product is a foam based insulation product that is applied to insulating cavity walls, floors or roofs. As this insulation product is sprayed to the openings in the area, it expands to create the insulation barrier. This foam insulation material is a chemical insulation product being made of polyurethane. The polyurethane comprises a chemical formulation of multi-ingredient chemicals. Apart from this main multi-ingredient chemical composition, sprayed foam insulation also contains other additives like fire retardants as well as colours too, often.

Apart from providing home insulation, spray foam based insulation materials are good air sealing. The air sealing treatment can be applied to several places of the house where small openings allow air passing such as cavities in the wall, cavities in the ceilings. The foam product can be sprayed using a special equipment to the targeted holes in the walls or ceilings. On spraying, the chemical formulation swells to cover up all the corners and crannies in the area. While application, the spare materials must be scraped off the wall pr other spaces to form uniform cavity insulation and ensure an effective air sealing guard to prevent air and heat conduct.

Advantages of Spray Foam Home Insulation
There are several advantages of sprayed foam home insulation materials. First of all, sprayed foam home insulation is an easy to apply insulation option that fills up the targeted nooks in the walls completely providing it air sealing protection to stop further air passing. This insulation material is known to reduce air infiltration and air circulation that allows heat transfer through gaps in the walls. The sprayed foam insulation also acts as a vapour barrier. However, the installer must consult with the local building department whether the building needs a vapour barrier. As the foam materials expand well in the tight areas, it makes a good insulation for steel framing outlets or forming insulation around outlets.

Apart from polyurethane chemical composition, the spray foam home insulation products can be combined with other insulation materials such as fibreglass batt in order to reduce cost. The layer 1000 of foam based insulation mixed with other materials performs better air sealing thus turning the home more energy smart within lesser budget. Some home insulation contractors use this foam product as a 1′ inch layer of closed cell foam and then tops the layer with fibreglass batt insulation for increasing performance of the insulation.
