Is Fibreglass Loft Insulation Favourable Or Unfavourable For Your House?

Fibreglass loft insulation is by far the most considered by UK households when they decide to insulate their loft space. This is mainly because fibreglass or blanket loft insulation materials are easier to use and available at cheaper rates. However, such insulation does not make an exception to the rule that every substance comes with positive and negative aspects.

Fibreglass insulation materials are sold in rolls and it are extremely easy to find as they are available in any of your local DIY stores. Due to the easy procedure of laying fibreglass insulation, you do not hire insulation contractors and stack up insulation costs with labour charges. Hence, this insulation process is viable to take over as a DIY loft insulation project. The fibreglass loft insulation materials are usually sold in rolls that measure 400mm or 16inches wide, whereas the thickness of the material ranges from 100mm or 4inches to 200mm or 8inches. UK-based houses are recommended to lay fibreglass insulation at a minimum thickness of 200mm. For thinner insulation rolls, recommended depth is suitable only when the additional insulation is laid on top of the existing insulation to achieve 200mm thickness.

Before you lay the material, measure the length of the joist space across the loft area and count the number of joists to estimate the total area to receive loft insulation treatment. Despite easily availability, easiness of use and reasonable rates, fibreglass loft insulation products require some degree of caution for installers. Manufacturers of fibreglass materials advise some precautions while laying this insulation.

Moreover, fibres of such materials tend to be horrendous when they come into contact with human skin. One needs to cover their noses and faces with masks to prevent inhaling them, as they cause irritation to throats if inhaled. Installers must cover their eyes and arms too. They must be clad in a hat, goggles, gloves and mask. However, the good thing is that once you have put on these clothing items properly, the process of laying the fibreglass becomes free of risks. At the same time, a roof area, after it has received loft insulation treatment, can block substantial heat loss, thus making yo 1000 ur home energy efficient enough to save energy and money from being spent on energy bills.
